Dubai is once again taking the lead in futuristic transport as it gears up to launch the world’s first commercial flying taxi service by early 2026. This groundbreaking initiative will allow passengers to fly across the city in electric aircraft, cutting travel time between key destinations from nearly an hour to just a few minutes.

The project is a collaboration between Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), California-based Joby Aviation, and UK-based infrastructure partner Skyports. The electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft completed its first successful piloted test flight in June 2025 at the Margham test site, marking a major milestone for the city’s vision of urban air mobility.

The aircraft, developed by Joby Aviation, can carry a pilot and up to four passengers with luggage. It can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h and cover a range of 160 kilometers on a single charge. With rapid charging technology, it only takes around 10 minutes between flights, making it highly efficient for short, high-frequency routes within the city.

The first phase of the air taxi network will feature four key vertiport locations: Dubai International Airport (DXB), Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. These specially designed terminals will allow seamless transfers between flying taxis and other modes of transport like the Dubai Metro, taxis, and buses.

The Dubai International Vertiport (DXV), located near Dubai International Airport, has already received technical approval and is expected to handle over 170,000 passengers annually. Each vertiport will be equipped with lounges, security checks, and rooftop landing pads for a smooth and convenient experience.

Booking a flight will be done via a mobile app, with expected prices starting at premium levels, similar to luxury ride-hailing services. However, as the service expands, officials say pricing will become more accessible to the general public.

This initiative not only reinforces Dubai’s role as a global pioneer in smart mobility but also supports the UAE’s sustainability goals. The aircraft are 100% electric and significantly quieter than helicopters, making them suitable for densely populated areas without disturbing the environment.

Dubai has secured an exclusive six-year agreement with Joby Aviation, giving the city a global edge in launching and operating electric air taxis. The UAE’s aviation authorities are also working closely with Joby on aircraft certification and vertiport regulations to ensure the service meets the highest safety standards.

With this innovative step, Dubai is setting a new benchmark for urban transport. Residents and visitors alike will soon experience a new way to travel—fast, quiet, and from the sky.
