Fujairah, UAE — In a groundbreaking move that combines road safety with art and innovation, Fujairah has officially launched the first-ever musical road in the UAE and the Arab world, offering motorists a unique driving experience that literally plays to the tune of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.”

Located on Sheikh Khalifa Street near the entrance of Fujairah City—just before the Fujairah Police Headquarters and Court—this 750-meter stretch transforms the daily commute into a musical journey. As cars drive over specially engineered grooves in the road surface at the recommended speed of 105 km/h, the vibrations produce the famous classical melody, delighting both drivers and passengers.

A Creative Approach to Road Safety

The project, launched by the Fujairah Fine Arts Academy in collaboration with local authorities, is designed to promote safer driving habits by encouraging motorists to maintain a steady speed to enjoy the full musical experience.

“We wanted to create something that not only entertains but also enhances awareness of speed limits. It’s an innovative way to engage drivers while adding an artistic touch to our roads,” said a spokesperson for the Fujairah Fine Arts Academy.

How Does the Musical Road Work?

The musical road uses a simple yet ingenious method: grooves of varying depth and spacing are cut into the asphalt. As car tires roll over them, vibrations are generated that correspond to specific musical notes. When driven over at the correct speed, these vibrations combine to recreate Beethoven’s timeless “Ode to Joy”—part of his Ninth Symphony.

A First in the Arab World

While musical roads exist in countries such as Japan, South Korea, and the USA, this is the first of its kind in the Arab region. Fujairah’s musical road has quickly captured attention both locally and internationally, with videos going viral on social media.
